Counterplas - Rapid Improvement Workshop

Counterplas is a leading technical injection moulder operating within the UK, and has over many years built a reputation for innovation and excellence. Whether your product exists, or it is at the concept stage, they have the manufacturing and design expertise to satisfy your requirements. They have a large selection of modern, energy efficient machines that range from 40 T to 550 T as well as a fully equipped toolroom within the group of companies.

With customer demands increasing Paul Isherwood the MD at Counterplas decided it was time to move the business forward so as to create manufacturing capacity through the reduction of waste rather than through capital investment in more machinery; however they were already in the process of up grading some of their moulding machines.

The first team of 5 completed the Lean Academy’s 12 week rapid improvement workshop  in December of last year Paul Isherwood has stated that the business has benefited in many ways from this process.

“We knew we had large areas of inefficiency in the business, what we did not have was the tools to rectify these problems, by engaging with the Lean Academy, we now have good control over our processes and can accurately measure our downtime, importantly have the skills to do something about it – the team has a better understanding of the roles in the business and how those roles are interconnected.”

Paul has also given the Lean Academy the following endorsement firstly by starting the second group on the 12 week RIW programme and secondly by stating.

“I would recommend the Lean Academy 100% to any other business.”

Transforming Business Improvement through Knowledge Transfer

Since opening its doors in 2005 the Lean Academy's approach to business improvement has been based on the development of long term partnerships. Working with companies to develop the knowledge base required to ensure that the Continuous Improvement initiatives that are undertaken are built on solid ground are success to date is based not on what "we do to you" but on what "we do with you". This simple but critical difference is the reason we are so successful in our field.

The simplest approach to Continuous Improvement from the perspective of the outside body is to come into the business, be told where the perceived short comings are take the required remedial actions and go. This approach is short sighted and unsustainable.

The Lean Academy's approach is to join with the business, work together to establish the actual issues and not the perceived that are affecting the company, then work together as a team to solve these problems ensure that there is a robust transfer of knowledge thereby producing sustainable results.

This approach has been shown to work across all sectors of business from Manufacturing to Construction the Health Service and now into Retail, HR and Sales.
